September 7, 2007

Fantasy Sports LiveThe week covering September 1st through September 7th is nearing its conclusion. That means it's time to look back and reflect on some of the more significant bits of news from the world of major league baseball.

On Saturday night, Reds pitcher Clay Buchholz pitched a no-hitter to lead his team to a 10-0 win over the Orioles. It was only his second major league appearance.

Barry Bonds hit his 762nd homer on Wednesday night off of promising young pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. The home run lifted the Giants to a 5-3 win over the Rockies.

The steroid controversy continues in the MLB. The New York Times reported that steroids investigator George Mitchell, who was hired by Commissioner Bud Selig in 2006, wants to speak to 45 curent or former players. So far, Yankees slugger Jason Giambi is the only active player to acknowledge meeting with Mitchell. As usual, the player's union isn't being much of a help, but is that any real surprise?

Marlin's Miguel Cabrera became the 3rd youngest player in MLB history to drive in 500 runs when he hit a run-scoring single in the 5th inning against the Nationals on Tuesday night. Cabrera joins an elite group, trailing only Mel Ott and Ted Williams. It also marked Cabrera's 96th RBI of the season. He only needs 4 more RBIs to become the 3rd-youngest player with four consecutive 100 RBI seasons.

Cardinals' Juan Encarnacion may have suffered a career-ending injury after being struck in the eye by a foul ball last Friday. It is not certain whether he will regain full use of his vision. The eye socket was crushed by the impact, and it was compared to an egg shell being destroyed. The optic nerve also suffered severe trauma. Here's wishing him a speedy recovery.

Cardinals OF Juan Encarnacion will miss the rest of the season after suffering multiple fractures to his left eye socket and a serious eye injury. This happened Friday night versus the Reds after he was struck by a foul ball while waiting in the on-deck circle. As of Saturday, he was still in the hospital under observation. His long term prognosis is "undetermined at this time."

The Mets picked up a 7-1 win over the Braves on Friday night, stopping their five-game losing streak. Carlos Delgado his a three-run homer for the Mets and P John Maine gave up only three hits and one run. The Mets continue to lead the NL East.

The Oakland Athletics have lost three players for the rest of the season. They include 3B Eric Chavez, CF Mark Kotsay and OF Travis Buck. Chavez will be undergoing surgery on his right shoulder, then receiving treatment for back spasms. Buck will have surgery to tighten a loose ligament in his right elbow. Kotsay started the season on the DL following back surgery, but has continued to suffer from back spasms.

Yankee P Joba Chamberlain was suspended for two games and fined $1,000 a day after throwing consecutive 98 to 99 mph pitches at the head of Boston's Kevin Youkilis. Chamberlain elected not to appeal and will sit out this weekend's game (when he wouldn't have been pitching anyway).

Marlins IF Aaron Boone will undergo knee surgery and miss the rest of the season. He has been on the DL since June 25th. He hurt the same knee in 2003 and missed all of the 2004 season. This injury is what prompted the Yankees to originally obtain Alex Rodriguez from the Rangers. This season, Boone was batting .286 with 5 homers and 28 RBIs.

Thursday night, the Indians picked up their 6th win in a row by beating the Mariners 6-5. This win allowed the Indians to keep a 4 1/2 game lead over Detroit in the AL Central. With the loss, the Mariners fell behind the Yankees in the wild card race.

Chase Utley is back in the Phillies lineup after missing time following hand surgery. Utley is batting .336 on the season with 41 doubles, 17 homers and 82 RBIs in 100 games. With Utley out of the lineup, the Phillies were 15-13.
